Gianfranco Reverberi - Nel Cimitero Di Tucson

Another scorching hot Sunday afternoon. Here's a dusty old recording from a late-60s spaghetti western soundtrack, from the cult classic Django series. Theme from Preparati La Bara!, the track has a tragic tone with a sullen bassline accompanied by dreary strings and horns.

They're not as well known as Morricone, but between Gianfranco Reverberi and his brother Gian Piero, the duo composed for some of the best of 60s and 70s Italian cinema.

This song contains a clip that you'll all recognise, as it was sampled in what is one of the biggest international hit songs in recent years.

Mille - Crysteena

Featuring a superb song every day by a new artist requires listening to a lot of new music. A song needs to be any of catchy, unique or simply fantastic to hold my attention—so naturally, when a song lacks any vocals it lessens the chance of catching my ear. I don't prejudge any music, including instrumental genres, but they tend to be small percentage of my heavy rotations.

Mille, electro producer from Sweden, forges mindblowing, chiptune-influenced compositions. His instrumental electro track “Crysteena” would make Daft Punk green with robot envy. One day when machines rule the earth, this will be their soundtrack.

Chester French - She Loves Everybody

Chester French debuted in late 2008 with their first single “She Loves Everybody”, which received smashing video treatment in the new year. Their album Love the Future is out now stateside and it releases worldwide June 1 along with a vinyl LP version.

The single is a bitter love song, but it's the music video that really hits hard. The video is done in black and white but somehow it clearly shows that red is the colour of both love and blood.

Electric Owls - Magic Show

Four albums deep in The Comas, founding member Andy Herod has a new project. Electric Owls is a magical mélange of shiny happy voices backed by warm acoustics and psychedelic synths. Their song “Magic Show” is so enchanting that, while listening, I can see a vivid music video in my head—something freaky and polychromatic like recent videos from Rainbow Arabia or Florence and the Machine.

Bionic Commando Theme (Surkin Remix)

The new Bionic Commando game, sequel to the 1987 arcade classic of the same name, was released last week. In the last few weeks leading up to the release, remixes of the theme song have been appearing everywhere. Here's the best of them all, by French electro DJ and producer Surkin.

Surkin's remix treatment, turning a lo-fi video game theme into a killer club tune, works surprisingly well. Whether you know the game and it's theme song or not, this track conjures an old school gaming nostalgia and the tune is insanely addictive.

You Love Her Coz She's Dead - Superheroes

You Love Her Coz She's Dead love to write about “superheroes, superheroes & superheroes but, mainly just about superheroes”. Their song, appropriately titled “Superheroes”, is a ridiculously catchy new rave chiptune that sounds a lot like Crystal Castles but with a harder edge. This is dirty dancefloor seizure music at it's finest.

The Gotee Brothers - Yoknapatawpha

On lazy Sunday afternoons, if I'm not sleeping, I like to just relax and listen to my favourite old tunes. For the past two decades, acid jazz has been a small genre with a high saturation of talent but little recognition. The bastard child of jazz, hip-hop, funk and downtempo beat music, it's difficult to dig up the undiscovered gems of acid jazz, even today with the vast resources of the internet.

In 1996, before I knew what acid jazz was, I discovered an incredible album that has yet to tarnish over time. Erace by The Gotee Brothers was a collaborative project between many artists that included a charity foundation to promote equality and fight racism. The history is interesting, as the man leading the project was Toby McKeehan of 90s Christian rock group dc Talk, who was just starting his indie label Gotee Records that has since brought us punk, crunk and hip-hop artists like Relient K, Family Force 5, Grits and L.A. Symphony.

Here's one of my favourites from the album, “Yoknapatawpha (A Mental Mississippi)”. A delicious breakbeat leads the track, which is layered with funky riffs of organ and horns. Other highlights of the album include a complex acoustic guitar instrumental and a rendition of “Why Can't We Be Friends” that surpasses the original War version.

The Most Serene Republic - Heavens to Purgatory

Canadian indie rock band The Most Serene Republic have finished their third full-length and have offered us a delicious taste of it. “Heavens to Purgatory” begins with acoustic strumming and a compelling singer, quickly proceeding to indie clichés of ukelele, sweet female voice and handclaps—thank God for clichés and those who know how to use them properly.

Dakota - Can't Remember

Ben Talbot, frontman of Dakota, started the band after a painful break-up and an escape to the sea that inspired an album of 11 bittersweet songs. The first preview of the album is “Can't Remember”, a gorgeous powerpop ballad infused with an ethereal string section and spellbinding guitar riffs. Ben sings about a girl who, having grown old and lost all memory of her past love, finds herself alone. The bitter lyrics and graceful strings make this song engaging and unforgettable.

Dakota reminds me that the musical sourcepoint for nearly all powerpop began with The Beatles, The Kinks and The Who. There is a firm line between true powerpop and today's punk and crunk-influenced bands that call themselves powerpop.

Dakota's album Here, There and Everywhere releases in autumn and they are offering the first sneak peek, “Can't Remember” as a free download.

Fleming and John - Harder to Believe Than Not To

Husband and wife team Fleming and John are a striking mid-90s rock duo with a hint of lo-fi noisepop. If The Kills travelled ten years into the future and reformed with the matured voice of La Roux's Elly Jackson, it might result in something resembling the clandestine elegance of Fleming McWilliams and John Mark Painter.

Cosmo Jarvis - Mel's Song

Cosmo Jarvis brings the dirty, drunken grime with his second EP, Chapter Two. The creativity doesn't stop there! The basement singer-songwriter/producer seemingly picks genres out of a sweaty hat—and then sings (and raps) about abuse, promiscuity, patricide and unrequited stalker-love.

The standout track of the EP is “Mel's Song”, a rosy guitar tune about Melanie and the foul, unkempt and misunderstood boy who wants nothing more than to spend the day with her (and maybe a shag). It's bubblegum folk-pop, but dirty bubblegum that's been kicked around on the ground awhile. It's funny, catchy and Radio 1 would champion it with slobbery infatuation, if it weren't for the censors.

Gossip - Heavy Cross

Three years since Gossip's breakthrough third album Standing in the Way of Control and the immortalization by Soulwax of its anthemic title track. Frontwoman Beth Ditto won NME's Coolest Person in Rock award that year and appeared nude on the cover of NME the following year (I apologise in advance of your Google Image Search).

Now that they have accomplished all that a trio of punks could hope for (tabloid fixtures and Soulwax remix?), they're back for more. Gossip's fourth album Music for Men releases June 22 and the massive lead single “Heavy Cross” is out now.

Beth's mighty voice roars over heavy drums and a frenzy of stabbing by the lead guitar. If you're new to Gossip, think Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but with a lead singer that could make a snack of the actual lead singer.

The single is superb but, yet again, Gossip are outshone by the remix—this time by 2009's most innovative remixer, Fred Falke.

This post was targeted by the IFPI for offering a download link of Gossip's “Heavy Cross”, despite the song having been posted on numerous other blogs, none of whom have received takedown orders, as far as I know.

I always honour such requests, but this one was sent to my blog host instead of to me, an action that was inappropriate and inconsiderate to both the writer (me) and the band (Gossip). My entire (favourable) review of Gossip's music was removed instead of just the download link. I am awaiting a response from Columbia/Sony as to whether the song is in fact cleared for blog writers to share. Columbia has informed me that the song was never cleared for blog writers to post, although I have yet to find out whether their PR company sent out the song or not.

The Blam - Various Disgraces

Apparently this is Blam, but it may not be the Blam we're writing about.

If you were in charge of the café disco at the office, what songs would you put on the mix CD? Michael Scott starts with iconic party hits like “Car Wash”, “Putting Out Fire” and “Everybody Dance Now” but like any good party mix, he throws in some hidden gems, including “Various Disgraces” by short-lived indie rock band The Blam. Once again Michael shows us that, despite his overabundant shortcomings, he occasionally gets it right.

Born in Toronto, Ghostcat frontwoman Ali Cat grew up alongside the likes of Crystal Castles and Death from Above 1979. Taking some of that new rave and rock influence, she moved to London in 2006 and soon formed Ghostcat within the walls of an eight-bedroomed ‘aspiring art collective’.

Passion Pit, psychedelic electro band from Boston, is poised to draw some of Britain's thriving electro scene to America. Their first single “Sleepyhead” is already massive, but I've been really feeling their latest swelling hit, “Little Secrets”. Dub Pistols - Ganja

Dub Pistols caught my attention years ago with “Cyclone”, an old-school jam that reminds me of Bell Biv Devoe, and again with their Molotov collaboration on the Y Tu Mamá También soundtrack. It's their forthcoming album Rum and Coke that has made me a fan. I'm reminded of the first time I listened to Michael Franti, dynamic reggae beats played by a massively skilled band and fronted by unyielding rocksteady vocals.

Dub Pistols have outdone themselves on this album. Nearly every track boasts a necksnapping beat with long lasting replayability. So, here is one of them—exactly two weeks late for its own holiday, “Ganja” by Dub Pistols.

Foxy, a Latin disco funk group, achieved little success during their brief run in the late 70s. Basement Jaxx—one of those semi well-known groups that had not previously come within range of my radar.
