Foster the People serenades Vancouver at secret acoustic show

Foster the People plays to a sold-out crowd tonight at the Vancouver's much-too-small Venue Nightclub, but to warm things up, they just played a secret acoustic warm-up set this afternoon! The Peak announced the location this morning, so I rounded up some friends and we converged upon the closed-off street in front of The Peak's own headquarters at 8th and Helmock. Foster the People was hanging out at the station, poking their heads out a few times from the third-floor balcony, while getting ready for a chilled acoustic session.

We had almost two hours to kill, so we hung out on the sidewalk with the growing crowd of fans, radio staff and curious passersby. When the clock struck 1:00pm, the band was briefly introduced, and I looked around to see a massive crowd had formed, filling the street and sidewalks.

It's a warm Tuesday afternoon and there was just a bit of light rain as they began. The band asked, “Who skipped school to be here?” One half of the crowd cheered, and the other half roared when they asked, “And who's dodging work right now?”

The set was short and sweet, just an acoustic warm-up before tonight's show. They played their three big hits, “Houdini”, “Helena Beat” and of course, “Pumped Up Kicks”. They also slipped in “Color On the Walls”, a new one from the album that they introduced as a song for 4 year-olds. Frontman Mark Foster took the lead with his guitar, giving us warm acoustic renditions of songs that are usually led by keys and synths. There was a different kind of energy in the crowd, as we all watched a band we love, doing a different kind of performance than what we usually get to see.

It was an intimate serenade, from high upon the balcony to Vancouver on the street below. Afterwards, the band graciously came down to meet some fans and sign autographs, while The Peak staff gave away some tickets to tonight's show. Thanks to The Peak for kicking off our summer with a fantastic little block party!

Vancouver photographer Billy Bob Koruna was there this afternoon, shooting for us. He sweet-talked his way up to the balcony during the set and was the only photographer to get a few quick shots up close.

The street had to be shut down for the large crowd that showed up for the secret show.

Cosmo Jarvis - Gay Pirates

The last time we reviewed Cosmo Jarvis, he was singing a charming song about Melanie, the girl next door and the grimy-but-cute boy who is in love with her. Cosmo is back with a fiery new single “Gay Pirates”, which is well, a love song about gay pirates. He brings on the charm once again, turning whatever you'd expect from the title, into a tragic ballad of two swashbuckling lovers.

Buy the single on January 23rd or pre-order it now from Cosmo Jarvis, where you can also download an acoustic version of the song! The single is the first from his upcoming sophomore album Is the World Strange Or Am I Strange?, slated for late March 2011. If you're in the UK, he has a few upcoming live dates before Christmas!

Owl City - Hot Air Balloon

Owl City, once known as Adam Young, is a pop crafter carelessly strumming his way along the border between the lands of Twee and Powerpop territory, careful not to be caught on the wrong side by anyone that comes along. When trouble is spotted in the distance, he can always ascend above the treetops and spend the afternoon in his hot air balloon. Leave your jacket behind, clouds wouldn't dare come between the sunshine and Owl City.

Owl City's Hot Air Balloon digital single is available now, and his new full-length drops July 14 on iTunes and July 28 in stores. Tickets for his North American tour this fall are on sale now.

Flunk - Cigarette Burns

Norwegian electronic band Flunk's new album This Is What You Get has no confines, mixing up downtempo, chillout, ambient and minimalist dubstep. The pop side of the album drifts all the way to acoustic folk with “Cigarette Burns”, an out of place but ear-lickingly delicious tune where singer Anja Øyen Vister's Nordic accent naturally turns to twee.

The album is out now on Beatservice Records. It also includes a superb cover of Radiohead's “Karma Police”.

Electric Owls - Magic Show

Four albums deep in The Comas, founding member Andy Herod has a new project. Electric Owls is a magical mélange of shiny happy voices backed by warm acoustics and psychedelic synths. Their song “Magic Show” is so enchanting that, while listening, I can see a vivid music video in my head—something freaky and polychromatic like recent videos from Rainbow Arabia or Florence and the Machine.

Electric Owls' debut full-length Ain't Too Bright is out now on Vagrant Records.

Cosmo Jarvis - Mel's Song

Cosmo Jarvis brings the dirty, drunken grime with his second EP, Chapter Two. The creativity doesn't stop there! The basement singer-songwriter/producer seemingly picks genres out of a sweaty hat—and then sings (and raps) about abuse, promiscuity, patricide and unrequited stalker-love.

The standout track of the EP is “Mel's Song”, a rosy guitar tune about Melanie and the foul, unkempt and misunderstood boy who wants nothing more than to spend the day with her (and maybe a shag). It's bubblegum folk-pop, but dirty bubblegum that's been kicked around on the ground awhile. It's funny, catchy and Radio 1 would champion it with slobbery infatuation, if it weren't for the censors.

Polly Scattergood - Please Don't Touch

Polly Scattergood burst into the UK indie scene last fall. After many years spent writing hundreds of deeply personal songs while working at a tomato stand and an ice cream factory, she has released her eponymous debut.

Polly's intimate songwriting and her charming eccentricities have earned her many devoted fans, including myself. She writes to her fans in her blog almost daily, and one of her singles, “I Hate the Way”, came with a xeroxed sheet of her original handwritten lyrics scattered with notes and scribbles—an authentic and very personal touch.

Her fourth single “Please Don't Touch” is the most infectiously catchy song on the album. The 4-track digital single releases May 4 on Mute. It also includes a brilliant remix by The Golden Filter that captures Polly's lovely idiosyncrasies and twists them over a metallic electrodance beat. The music video premiered on Polly's MySpace yesterday and you can watch it below.

The Fancy Toys - Gypsy Eyes

Upon first listen of The Fancy Toys, my thoughts swirled around what I could only describe as sophisticated silliness. A minute later I felt daft when I read the band's name again. Their distinctly inimitable creations are captivating, especially in their debut single, “Gypsy Eyes”. The Fancy Toys demand your attention like an unheralded prodigy at a café open mic.

Mike Bailey - Wild World

British TV series Skins has a reputation for introducing their fans to loads of fantastic music. Series one ends with one of the most intense finales of any television drama and the episode finishes with a montage of Mike Bailey (Sid) and the rest of the cast singing Cat Stevens' “Wild World”.

One eskimO - Kandi

One eskimO is a two-dimensional (literally) acoustic band dreamt up by London singer-songwriter Kristian Leontiou. Produced by Rollo Armstrong (Faithless, Dido), their debut single “Kandi” and its animated music video are fantastically enchanting. Toby Green of The Independent says “Kristian Leontiou...possesses a voice you could imagine appearing in Simon Cowell's wet dreams.”

Calm - Crossroads

Calm is a Japanese artist described as ambient electronica, but his latest album is more of a mismatched collection of individual songs, spanning many genres, that complement but do not correlate. Each song contains varying degrees of ambient grooves that are unconsensually forced to couple with normal instruments like acoustic guitar and piano. It's perplexing to hear, but somehow the result is fantastic.

This is the acoustic folk song, fronted by proper vocals and backed by a great piano riff.
