Yelle à la Commodore avec French Horn Rebellion

French Horn Rebellion started the night with smoke rolling over The Commodore's empty stage, while their dramatic intro played. When the two brothers from Milwaukee, Robert and David, took the stage, they made a few waves, gestures, taps on the decks and keyboards, and a fever began to spread through the quickly growing crowd on the dancefloor. They aren't entirely a band, or entirely a DJ duo either, but whatever they are, they are the type to give the audience a banging first impression. There's an odd thing about synthpop music: on record, it usually sounds chilled and relaxed, but even without changing much, the same songs live on stage become massive floor killers. It always shocks me a little every time. In the first few songs, David manned the tables while accomplished Robert played the French horn, running all over the stage and through the crowd, pumping up the audience like an overcaffeinated aerobics instructor. The band's antics and their pounding synth beats turned a small crowd that seemingly had no idea who French Horn Rebellion were, into a mass of dancing bodies. Perfect warmup for Yelle.

French Horn Rebellion - Up All Night
Previously: French Horn Rebellion - Beaches and Friends (Hey Champ Remix)

Yelle's bandmates, GrandMarnier and Tepr, took the stage first, dressed like big-game hunters on a safari, pounding their floor toms to the beat of “S'éteint le soleil”. I have no idea why this is the closing track on their new album Safari Disco Club. It's the perfect intro. A tall mass of foliage, shaped a little like a slender French woman, swept onto the stage and began singing. Further into the song, the lights went out and the music paused for effect, and when the lights flashed back on, Yelle's ghillie suit was gone, leaving her dressed in her trademark leopard skin. A few songs into the set, the band played “Ce jeu” and “La musique”, the second-biggest hits from the old and new albums. This is when it became apparent that the band actually reworks every song for the live show, not only giving them steadier, more danceable beats, but they also make sweeping changes to the instrumentation. Every song is essentially a remix, produced for the live show with GrandMarnier on drums and Tepr on keyboard and synths. It was a great effect, keeping the beat consistent to keep everyone dancing, even though they took a few brief breaks between songs to banter and introduce the next songs.

Going into the show, I was curious how the language barrier would affect the show, since every Yelle song is entirely in French, except when it's natural to borrow phrases from English, like the chorus of “Safari Disco Club”, the title track off the new album. Not many audience members were seen singing along during most of the show, but Yelle's French lyrics had no effect whatsoever on the energetic link between the band and the audience. After a funky Zapp-esque detour, where Tepr and GrandMarnier played sans Yelle, the band soared through more of their new material, finishing the set with the one song everyone knew the words to, as they shouted the simple chorus of, “Les animaux dansent dans la Safari Disco Club!” (For those of you without the basic elementary French that most of us have here, even in English-speaking Canada, it means, “The animals are dancing in the Safari Disco Club!”)

Sometimes, when an act leaves the stage, the crowd's cheering will rise and fall until they return for an encore. Yelle's audience, on the other hand, ROARED. GrandMarnier was so excited, he ran across the stage twice, first shooting the crowd with his camera, then pumping his fists in the air on the way back, which only charged up the crowd even more. I'm still kicking myself for not knowing enough French and enough Yelle to identify all the songs they played, but they played one more, then finished with the one everyone was waiting for, “A cause des garçons”. Et la concerte fini avec un grand éclat!

Foals, Freelance Whales and The Naked & Famous at The Commodore

This will not be a concert review of Foals, Freelance Whales and The Naked & Famous.

It's good to be back, Vancouver! I've been on a break, and I was going to return the other night with a (hopefully) fantastic review of one of the Commodore Ballroom's best lineup s this year: Foals, Freelance Whales and The Naked & Famous. But, the night before the show, I was informed that the people organizing the show had cut the entire guestlist. They gave me no explanation, so I imagine they had somehow determined that insulting the press was worth a few extra ticket sales. So, I got to miss one of my most anticipated shows of the year, while my friends, who bought tickets after I introduced them to the bands, went to the show without me. Them's the breaks when you're dealing with the jerks who run the music business. (Except publicists! I love publicists. Their job is literally to make everyone happy; bands, fans, record execs and journalists.)

Now that you know why I don't have a live review for you, there are still three bands that deserve your attention, so I'm going to give them some track reviews instead.

The Naked & Famous - Girls Like You (YSI)
I really should be introducing you to this Kiwi indie rock band with “Punching in a Dream” or “Young Blood”, the two songs that earned them many fond comparisons to MGMT. But, I have played those songs to death, so here's one with a little less radio flavour and a little more beauty. “Girls Like You” builds slowly over three verses before it hits the epic chorus of Thom and Alisa harmonizing with “Don't you know people write songs about girls like you?”

And, here's the really random, low-budget video they made for “Punching in a Dream”.

Freelance Whales - Generator ^ First Floor (YSI)
This band has a lot of variety, blending each song into a different ratio of electropop, indie synth-rock and folk. I suppose I would call them baroque pop—a rock band that likes to use tingly synths and folk instruments like a banjo, a harmonium and a glockenspiel. This song is famous from a Starbucks commercial, so not much more needs to be said. It's unique and it will stick in your head.

The sequel, “Generator ^ 2nd Floor” has a strange and enchanting video. Check it out.

Foals - Miami (YSI)
I still have no clue what "math rock" means, but I'll speculate that the geniuses of Foals devised a secret formula for creating a raw, sexy beat. The “Miami” video is less than sexy, but in a cheeky way. But, I can't show you the video here, due to the bumbling executives at Warner Music Group, so you'll have to find it on your own.

La Roux's 2nd 'In For The Kill' Video, Kanye West Remix

Welcome to La Roux's second “In For The Kill” video, featuring more velvet vanity and less 80s driving down the highway at night with bad-ass sunglasses.

It's been 20 months since the first “In For The Kill” video dropped, so to add more buzz, the new video comes together with a brand new remix featuring Kanye West. The video and the Kanye West remix both feature brand new vocals by La Roux's Elly Jackson.

VIDEO: Le retour de Yelle

The French electro popstar returns, backed by a thousand celebrities in her new video. The Hiltons (Paris & Perez) appear, as does Jacko and his monkey. Cats everywhere!

The single is out now on the numéro un French electro label, Kitsuné, and features this funky remix.

Love & Electrik - Sex Video

Apologies for the less-than-daily posts lately—as mentioned in the last couple posts, I was at the Calgary Folk Music Festival all weekend. The next day I flew to Vancouver to see La Roux, who were to be supported by “special guests”, which turned out to be Vancouver's own Love & Electrik. I remember Discobelle posting about them a little while ago, so I recognised “Sex Video” as soon as they began to play it. They also did a great cover of Phil Collins' “In the Air Tonight” and are the first band I've seen with a real, live talkbox.

The flashy duo is composed of Kevin Mah, who takes on the duties of keyboardist, keytarist and talkbox vocalist, and Roxy Aiston on lead vocals. Their performance was far more energetic than the relaxed electro beat they put on record with their first single “Sex Video”, but to be fair, all great bands have more energy onstage.

The single is out now on Tremendous Records, exclusively available through Beatport.

Numéro# - Angoisse, Paresse, Panique

Numéro# exposes the dark side of electropop and the sanguine side of new rave in their new album, Sport de Combat. At least three singles could be culled from this ingenious album, but the duo have not been lucky enough, so far, to generate sufficient buzz about their music. It's only a matter of time though.

If I had to name my favourite track on the album it would be “Angoisse, Paresse, Panique”. The vocals sweep from natural to synthetic and back again, throughout the song. The music is chromatic and harmonious, sounding more like the work of a master composer than a loop-hacking producer.

Another standout track, “Tout Est Parfait” was given a video to accompany and elevate the aural experience. It's artsy, pretentious and it manifests entirely in slow motion, but it's one of my favourite music videos ever, and it's perfect.

The album is out now on Saboteur Records.

New Calvin Harris Video

Calvin Harris' new single “Ready for the Weekend” premiered last month, and just posted the new music video a few hours ago. The single releases August 10 on CD and 12". The album, also entitled Ready for the Weekend, drops August 17.

His previous hit “I'm Not Alone” was more innovative and less formulaic, but “Ready for the Weekend” is more chilled and fun. Get ready for massive summer rotation of this one.

WhoMadeWho - Keep Me In My Plane

Copenhagen electropop group WhoMadeWho, together with director Good Boy Creative, have filmed a fascinating music video for their single “Keep Me In My Place”. The song is low-key and classy, while the video extends that theme into an ironic story of successful failure. It's a rare music video that reveals insight, that the song alone could not.

WhoMadeWho's new album The Plot is available now, as is the digital single for Keep Me In My Plane.

La Roux - Tigerlily

La Roux's debut hits stores this Monday the 29th, marking the second breakthrough female-fronted electro album of the summer. This weekend they take the stage at Glastonbury, then comes a tour of festivals and venues throughout North America and Europe for the rest of the summer.

They've had a few big singles already, but the album isn't tapped out yet. The next single will likely be “Tigerlily”, which somehow sounds like their previous single “In for the Kill”, but flipped with a massive drum track and the kind of beat that can summon the power of dance to take over anyone within aural proximity.

Sneaky Sound System - It's Not My Problem (Thin White Duke Remix)

Australian electro dance group Sneaky Sound System have been topping charts in their home country and are about to embark on their North American tour debut. Their 80s electropop sound is gradually turned towards electro house in this epic remix by the endlessly stunning talent of Stuart Price aka Thin White Duke.

UPDATE: The IFPI has had this article removed again so, for fear of losing my Blogger account, I've omitted the download link this time.

Dragonette - Fixin to Thrill

Canadian electro glam princess Martina Sorbara and her band Dragonette have just announced their sophomore album Fixin to Thrill and the lead single, the title track.

The single is guitar-laced and crunchy—as Sorbara says, the last album was the girl and this one is the boy. The single releases May 25 and the album in late summer.

Awesome New Republic - Birthday

Awesome New Republic have been slowly creeping around a few small music blogs, but have yet to gain any significant exposure. It could be the dreadfully emo-crunk band name, but that's easy to forgive once you turn up their sweaty dancefloor electro-rock. The standout track “Birthday” drops a sweltering beat that drips of drunken excess, like a DJ at a Miami beach mud wrestling match.

Filthy Dukes - Messages

Filthy Dukes, already well known for their remixes of Late of the Pier, White Lies and Bloc Party, premiered the video of their third single “Messages” over the weekend. Grabbing your attention in mere seconds, the song features Tommy Sparks on vocals, over a riot of gritty synths. Whether Monday morning or Friday night, Filthy Dukes readily bring on the royal ruckus.

The album Nonsense in the Dark is out now and already a solid pick for electro album of 2009, although we're still all waiting on La Roux and Little Boots! The single drops July 6, packed with remixes by Kris Menace, Burns, Brookes Brothers, We Have Band, Stop Making Me and one by the Dukes themselves. Here are two decent remixes we've got so far. The song does outshine them both but you can watch the video of it below!

Man Like Me - London Town

Garage dub trio Man Like Me are plotting to take over as urban kings of London town this summer. Having just played Camden Crawl, the top spring music festival in the UK, they are revving up to release their debut on May 11 and crash the likes of Glastonbury and Bestival this summer.

Their third single “London Town” is drenched with garage ska and electropop vibes. The song throws back to late 90s sunsoaked hip-hop jams, with electric piano chops and a neckpopping bassline.

Marie Serneholt - Disconnect Me

Marie Serneholt, formerly of Swedish boy/girl group A*Teens, started her solo career in 2006 and last month performed “Disconnect Me” in Melodifestivalen, the Swedish national song competition to determine who will represent the country in Eurovision 2009. The electro beats and not surprisingly, a few orchestra stabs reminiscent of Scandinavian symphonic metal, transform a generic pop song into a magnificently consuming arrangement.

This is the second Melodifestivalen artist I've posted—the first was Rigo & the Topaz Sound—so I'd like to emphasize once again that one should not compare Melodifestivalen and Eurovision to their less talented and less creative American counterparts.

Argon 40 - When the Words Don't Come

New York duo Argon 40 takes a brazen dive into the over-saturated sea of chillout music. The genre may have peaked years ago but Heather Greene and Adam Williams give it a smack to the chest with their debut single “When the Words Don't Come”. Heather's vocals rasp gorgeously against the smooth flowing synths, but the masterful complement is the gritty percussion.

Stars & Crosses - Got Me

Stars & Crosses calls themselves the next electro-rock supercollective—far from modest considering they're only two people. After hearing their first single though, I almost believe their flaunting exaggeration. Their first single “Got Me” is cool, catchy and it has that smooth, trashy and inexplicably addictive 80s sound.
