Biltmore Double Feature: Diamond Rings and Bonjay

Some bands sound good, albeit toned down, when you hear them on record. Then you go see them live and you're absolutely blown away by their energy and their immense stage presence. I have a strange habit of finding bands likes this. First there was The Bloody Beetroots show a few weeks ago, which the most explosive electronic show I've seen since Massive Attack. Then last week I saw Mayer Hawthorne, who sounds soulfully mellow on record, but puts on a show that induces an earthquake of nonstop dancing madness.

Tonight was double feature night at The Biltmore. Two separate shows, with Diamond Rings and a slew of opening acts taking the early show, followed by Bonjay for the late-night dance party.

During the opening acts, what really hit me hard was the driving electro sound of Vancouver's own Humans. I haven't found the one song I really liked that he sang about his shoes, but I'm listening to their album right now and I found another one. Avec Mes Mecs is their new album and the title track has my stamp of approval.

Humans - Avec Mes Mecs (YSI)

Diamond Rings has it all: a glamorous image, a riveting stage presence and a way of making his live music sound even bigger and better than the record. Between opening acts I was actually reading an article about him in the local Beatroute mag. John O'Regan's colourful new project had rather humble beginnings. He was hospitalized with Crohn's disease in the summer of 2008, but once he was recovering, he brought in his acoustic guitar and little Casio keyboards to write music. By the end of his hospital stay, he had the nurses coming in on their breaks and he would play for them.

He took the stage, instantly heating up the crowd with his scorching electro beats and his low-range indie rock voice. He sounds like a less-gloomy Matt Berninger, the frontman from The National. And he can dance! He was all over the stage, which had a mic for him on each side, one with his table of beat machines and one with his electric guitar. His shirt came off within a few songs (I still don't believe that The Biltmore actually installed air conditioning) and he showed off an elaborate necklace that his friend crafted for him from, in his words, at least five organic free-range unicorns. It seems that Diamond Rings has taken a lesson from fellow Toronto glam electro artist Peaches. Image is everything and extravagance is essential when it comes to live electronic music.

Diamond Rings got cut off at 11pm, after what seemed like a very short set. The crowd definitely wanted more, but there was nothing he could do about The Biltmore's "curfew". The stupid thing is, the next act, Bonjay, still didn't go on til after midnight.

Diamond Rings - All Yr Songs (YSI)
Diamond Rings - It's Not My Party (YSI)

After Diamond Rings, I left to find some late-night pizza. When I returned, there was a huge lineup of people waiting to join the Bonjay dance party. Luckily I had already been stamped, so I skipped the line and went inside. Bonjay started with that awesome song I already knew, “Stumble”, which is technically dancehall but is seriously sidetracked into experimental territory. It's like an atomic collision between Major Lazer, Animal Collective and maybe Rainbow Arabia.

A few songs later, they covered Caribou's “Jamelia”, which I didn't really take to when it made its rounds through the blogs, but Bonjay's Alana Stuart sang this one with so much intensity that I'm going to have to give it another run in my playlist. Next up was my favourite, “Frawdulent” which had a massive breakdown that doesn't appear in the recording. Their set felt a bit short as well, but Bonjay has only released on EP so far, so they had actually exhausted all their material.

Bonjay - Frawdulent (YSI)

Next up for Bonjay is Calgary on the 24th, as they head east across Canada for 6 more dates, then a couple US shows. Their debut EP Broughtupsy is out now on Mysteries of Trade.

Diamond Rings heads south for 11 US dates, starting on the 23rd in Los Angeles. His debut album Special Affections is out now on Secret City.

The Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77 at Commodore Ballroom

“Close your eyes and imagine, if you will, the bastard son of the Misfits and Daft Punk. As gruesome as the act of conception may appear, the union would generate the most grandiose of offspring.” Normally I wouldn't copy and paste from the official artist bio, but I couldn't have said it any better.

I arrived early at the Commodore and had a delicious burger while the first DJ put on a smashing offering of dubstep, soulless like it should be. How many concert venues have food, right? Never mind good food! Congorock transitioned to his own fidget house sound, and by the time he was done the whole dancefloor was jumping. He was more than just a warmup; more like the icing on the cake for Bloody Beetroots fans who are probably all just as familiar with Congorock.

I didn't know what to expect from The Bloody Beetroots. I had only really listened to the album. Would they just transition into their set like most DJs, but with the interesting addition of the live drummer I had heard about? No. The music stopped and the lights dimmed, igniting the screams of the crowd until The Bloody Beetroots and their Death Crew 77 took the stage. And what an entrance.

The music began dramatically, lights flashing, and slowly built to a devastating climax. Of course, a climax implies that you have to come down from it shortly after. Not when you're dancing in front of a stage full of The Bloody Fucking Beetroots. I don't know how they do it, but their music peaks at the start of the first song and just keeps peaking.

The stage was manned by four masked men: one guitarist, one drummer, one synthesist and one DJ mixing it all live. People often put electronic music in a lower category because they think it can't be translated to a live show. Well, the Bloody Beetroots bloody well figured it out.

I haven't even described the actual sound of their music and I feel I've said enough. Tomorrow, November 6th, is part two of their double date with Vancouver, and the last stop in their North American tour. Then, with hardly a few days off, they start a massive European tour on November 10th in Paris.

This video for “Cornelius” is another great way of describing a legendary night with The Bloody Beetroots.

Val Venosta - Peace and Quiet Is for Libraries!

Val Venosta, a band from Sweden that is causing a lot of ruckus among blogs today, has sent us this oddly fantastic disco song and music video. The video reinterprets a 1963 public safety video featuring apes riding bicycles. The clip has been used by other artists before, such as Boards of Canada, but this song is waaaayyy more fun!

If you love this as much as I do, you'll be happy to know Val Venosta has promised more to come! You can also find more on their MySpace.

80kidz & The Shoes - Frankie

You might know them from their remixes of MGMT, Lykke Li, Daft Punk and Black Kids, or from the latest Kitsuné Maison compilation. 80kidz alone can blast you with an ear-glitching new rave sound, but combined with the explosive neurosis of The Shoes (on vocals this time), they've produced a right floorkiller that will bleed your ears dry.

80kidz' debut album This Is My Shit is out now on CD in Japan and digitally via iTunes.

2009: The Second Half of a Spectacular Year

I was going to write a list of the best songs in the first half of 2009, but PMA's Top 50 article covered them all. Here's what I'm looking forward to in the second half of this amazing year of music.

July 6 Bombay Bicycle Club
Bombay Bicycle Club is fronted by a singer with the voice of a mythical golem, made of twigs, leaves and stones. After two singles that sound nothing alike, the English rock band releases their highly anticipated debut full-length, I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose.
Download “Always Like This” (zshare) (YSI)
Pre-order from Recordstore

July 14 Miss Derringer
Vintage pop with a strong girl-punk influence. Her upcoming album Winter Hill is simply stunning.
Download “Black Tears” (zshare) (YSI)
Pre-order from CD Universe

July 20/September Kid British
The UK garage/hip-hop group split their debut It Was This or Football, to release it in two parts this summer. A terrible idea if you consider their international fans who will have to pay more than standard album price for each half. The album is one of my favourites this year, but I can't justify buying it.
Download “Lost in London” (zshare) (YSI)
Pre-order the first half from Recordstore

August 17 Tinchy Stryder
Tinchy Stryder's last single “Number 1” was a number 1 hit in the UK this year, and deservingly so. Also worth mentioning is his previous single, “Take Me Back”, whose Sunship remix took top billing when the single was re-released. His album Catch 22 releases next month.
Download “Number 1 (Remix) (feat. N-Dubz & Kano) (zshare) (YSI)

August 24 Imogen Heap
Pushing the boundaries of pop music into unimaginable brilliance, Imogen Heap is no ordinary pop singer. She writes, produces and mixes her own music, having dreamt up some of the most innovative and memorable songs of the decade. Her third album Ellipse is set to release next month, though there's been a lack of buzz about it so far.
Listen to “Not Now But Soon” on YouTube
Pre-order from Amazon US/Amazon UK

August 25 Fun.
Indie pop circus from Nettwerk Records, their debut single suggests that Fun. is going to be laughing, drinking, smoking and singing their way to the peak of New York's indie scene. Their forthcoming full-length is aptly titled Aim & Ignite.
Download “At Least I'm Not As Sad As I Used to Be” (zshare) (YSI)

September Basement Jaxx
Basement Jaxx floored us all with the breathtaking disco sound of “Raindrops” that could easily take them from B-list to juggernaut status this summer. The album Scars is due in September.
Download “Raindrops” (zshare) (YSI)

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour
Amy Winehouse handpicked The Asteroids Galaxy Tour for an opening slot of a concert, then Steve Jobs handpicked them for an iPod Touch commercial last year. The Danish psychedelic pop band, fronted by the charming and adorable Mette Lindberg, has been making waves in Europe for months now, playing sold-out shows with top billing. Their album has been delayed several times, now tentatively scheduled for autumn, after their summer tour with Katy Perry.
Download “The Sun Ain't Shining No More” (zshare) (YSI)

The Very Best
The highly anticipated debut album from The Very Best, the London pairing of club DJs Radioclit and afro-pop singer Esau Mwamwaya, releases this autumn. No matter how much mainstream popularity it lacks, everybody loves African music. This album is sure to be massive in any country where the people love to dance.
Download “Warm Heart of Africa” (zshare) (YSI)

Troy This
Troy This, rumoured to be the secret lovechild of David Bowie and Janet Jackson, is an enigma. Liquid pop music runs through his veins. His mysterious origin found him recording a song with Swedish pop queen Robyn, resulting in a perfectly matched duet with remarkable chemistry. He's working on a pop masterpiece that we hope will be revealed in late 2009.
Download “American Dream (Happy Song) (feat. Robyn) (zshare) (YSI)
Download “One Day” (zshare) (YSI)

Dragonette
Martina Sorbara and her Dragonette boys released their electro rock single “Fixin to Thrill” earlier this year. Then, last week, they surprised us with “Boys & Girls”, a heavy dance track produced by Martin Solveig. The album Fixin to Thrill is due in autumn of 2009.
Download “Boys & Girls” (zshare) (YSI)

Super Viral Brothers
This spring, Super Viral Brothers came to us from Stockholm without warning, with their nonsensical underground hit “Hot Chocolate + Polar Bear Rug”. The song sounds like Dangermouse, Cee-Lo and some magical white electro powder. Their debut album Wires in Love is coming soon.
Download “Hot Chocolate + Polar Bear Rug (Dada Life Remix) (zshare) (YSI)

Those are just 12 of the fantastic albums due in the last half of 2009. What are you looking forward to?

Martin Solveig & Dragonette - Boys & Girls [MP3]

Before the weekend I showed you the retro musical-styled video for Martin Solveig's hot new single, “Boys & Girls”, featuring Dragonette and filmed in the Paris mansion of fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier for his latest scent, Ma Dame.

As I hinted in Friday's article, I've just received the official MP3 of “Boys & Girls”. This is not the YouTube rip posted recently on other blogs, and it's a bit different from the video version.

Martin Solveig + Dragonette - Boys & Girls

Ma Dame is the latest addition to Jean-Paul Gaultier's famous line of perfumes. The French fashion designer is promoting his new fragrance with a music video, shot in his own home—a brand new track by Martin Solveig and Dragonette.

We don't know whether this song will ever be made available for sale, but it may be available for free in the future. We'll keep you updated. In the meantime, here's the video and some great remixes of Martin Solveig's and Dragonette's most recent singles.

La Roux - Tigerlily

La Roux's debut hits stores this Monday the 29th, marking the second breakthrough female-fronted electro album of the summer. This weekend they take the stage at Glastonbury, then comes a tour of festivals and venues throughout North America and Europe for the rest of the summer.

They've had a few big singles already, but the album isn't tapped out yet. The next single will likely be “Tigerlily”, which somehow sounds like their previous single “In for the Kill”, but flipped with a massive drum track and the kind of beat that can summon the power of dance to take over anyone within aural proximity.

Das Racist - Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell

Das Racist. The name just begs for weird looks and the occasional misunderstanding. Oddly, the music does too.

Imagine a rap song where the emcees rap about being at Pizza Hut and Taco Bell and the lyrics barely extend beyond the song title. Now imagine that the song is actually good, maybe even brilliant—you can't, right? Well, you'll just have to trust me and listen to it.

The duo raps over a grimey drum track that sounds like classic L.A. Symphony, while the Wallpaper remix gives them a club beat with horns, guitars and electro synths. I can't decide which version I love more—can you?

Props to The Burning Ear for turning me on to this crazy song.

Little Boots - Hands (Album Review)

Victoria Hesketh, aka Little Boots, floated casually across the radar of many music fans and critics during the past year, usually mentioned among the ranks of rising British popstars like La Roux, Marina & the Diamonds and Florence & the Machine. Little Boots is the first among them to release her full-length, and it seems that she's swiftly surpassing the reputations of the others.

When I first heard Little Boots, I loved “Meddle”, but her other single at the time, “Stuck on Repeat”, sounded like a Madonna/Timbaland reject and her more recent “New in Town” was mediocre at best. Truthfully, I was far more excited for the upcoming albums by Marina, Florence and the lovely French girl with the gingerswoop. Low expectations aren't always bad.

From start to finish, Hands sounds smoother than its preceding singles and EPs. The tone of “New in Town” is warmer and, although the structure of the song is the same, it's gone from mildly unpleasant to well-deserving of it's track 1 placement.

The reworked “Stuck on Repeat” is shortened by half and no longer sounds like it's...stuck on repeat. The song that hooked me the first time I heard Little Boots, “Meddle”, is mostly unchanged, with a few tweaks that give it a more polished sound.

After going over the songs I already knew and finding shocking improvements, I listened to the rest of the album. It turns out, Little Boots not only renewed the singles that led up to her album, but has even more single potential. The electro hip-hop beat of “Remedy” is sure to bring her comparisons to Madonna's last album, but really, most of that album was shallow and pale next to the inspired wonder of Little Boots.

My new favourite, “Symmetry” is a spacey synthpop duet that matches Little Boots with Philip Oakey of The Human League. At four and a half minutes, it's the longest song on the album, fitting for an dark, glimmering dancefloor track that has many years of club potential.

Overall, the album plays like Ladyhawke's debut—there are a few radio-friendly songs that will catch your ear, but this is an album to listen to as a whole. Many of the songs are exceptional on their own, but together, the album is phenomenal.

Y.A.S. - Get It Right (Felix Da Housecat's ATL Sia Mix)

Y.A.S. is a groundbreaking new duo, fusing the French electro of Mirwais Ahmadzaï with the Arabic vocal stylings of Yasmine Hamdan. As is the case with any Arabic music, it sounds strange and exotic to my Anglo-ears, and I love it. Felix Da Housecat's remix of “Get It Right” simply builds on the original, adding more grinding electrosynths and giving it more of a club feel.

Y.A.S's debut full-length is out now, but Universal has excluded the world outside of France from purchasing it. For the rest of the world, piracy is the only convenient option Universal has left us. I won't provide any such links, though regional restrictions provoke me like nothing else.

Weekend Warriors - Take Me to LA

Electro beats, 90s alt. rock vocals and an overall crunk vibe—Weekend Warriors have manufactured a disastrous formula of tired clichés, but the result is surprisingly tasty. Their MySpace bio brags of their Top 40 appeal and their appearances on The Hills and Paris Hilton's new show.

George Michael meets Daft Punk. Two random well-known names assembled together is a popular and easy way for a band to describe itself, but in this case Seb's ambitious description is surprisingly accurate. As most people are aware, George and those French robot guys are universally considered awesome, so you'll want to check this one out.

Mille - Crysteena

Featuring a superb song every day by a new artist requires listening to a lot of new music. A song needs to be any of catchy, unique or simply fantastic to hold my attention—so naturally, when a song lacks any vocals it lessens the chance of catching my ear. I don't prejudge any music, including instrumental genres, but they tend to be small percentage of my heavy rotations.

Mille, electro producer from Sweden, forges mindblowing, chiptune-influenced compositions. His instrumental electro track “Crysteena” would make Daft Punk green with robot envy. One day when machines rule the earth, this will be their soundtrack.

Filthy Dukes - Messages

Filthy Dukes, already well known for their remixes of Late of the Pier, White Lies and Bloc Party, premiered the video of their third single “Messages” over the weekend. Grabbing your attention in mere seconds, the song features Tommy Sparks on vocals, over a riot of gritty synths. Whether Monday morning or Friday night, Filthy Dukes readily bring on the royal ruckus.

The album Nonsense in the Dark is out now and already a solid pick for electro album of 2009, although we're still all waiting on La Roux and Little Boots! The single drops July 6, packed with remixes by Kris Menace, Burns, Brookes Brothers, We Have Band, Stop Making Me and one by the Dukes themselves. Here are two decent remixes we've got so far. Molella - Atmosphere

Italian disco-house producer Molella has been topping dance charts in Italy, producing singles and remixes for the likes of ATB, Gala, Bob Sinclar and Boy George. He has just released a new single, “Atmosphere”, of which the Yesterday remix outshines the original. The remix is a rhythmic dance anthem with a sexy bassline and calming vocals by an uncredited singer (maybe Molella himself).

This track has massive potential, so long as we can ignore that creepy grin.
